Filmed in Quixadá, Ceará, Gugu’s World is scheduled for nationwide release in Brazil on November 5, 2026. Allan Deberton’s film was selected to represent the country in the race for a 2027 Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film, according to Paris Filmes. The story centers on Gugu, an almost 12-year-old football fan who lives with his grandmother Dilma near a reservoir. Drought lowers the water and exposes the remains of an old town. At the same time, Dilma’s memory begins to fail. Afraid he will have to leave her and move in with his estranged father, Gugu tries to hide what is happening.
Yuri Gomes plays Gugu, Teca Pereira plays Dilma and Lázaro Ramos plays his father, Batista. The film’s introduction connects family relationships and childhood identity to the landscape of Ceará’s interior: the setting is part of the boy’s predicament.film’s introduction ↗
Before its nationwide release, the film screened at festivals including the Berlinale and Gramado. The distributor’s September announcement records two awards in Berlin’s Generation Kplus section, alongside directing, acting and audience awards at Gramado.distributor’s September announcement ↗
