Starting Phantom Blade Zero: deciding what to do next in combat and exploration
A tough enemy, an overhead item and a locked door do not necessarily need the same solution. Before retracing the map or replacing your equipment, work out whether the problem is timing, a missing tool or quest progress.

This article draws on the combat and exploration guide and related route material. It helps identify the next step rather than replace full boss or quest guides. Descriptive terms are not presented as independently verified English UI labels.combat and exploration guide ↗
1. Learn how a new weapon’s attacks connect
After equipping a new weapon, read its moves and advanced explanations, then practise linking attacks. The source describes different combinations depending on the order of ordinary attacks and attacks associated with the mechanic labelled 杀气 in the Chinese guide. Judging a weapon by its opening move alone can obscure when it works best.
Match enemy attack signals to the relevant tutorial instructions. Learn the timing of individual actions before combining them into offensive and defensive sequences, rather than pressing several commands without understanding the result.
2. Check what an unreachable item requires
Some map targets need tools obtained later. Certain overhead packages require the bow 羽弓, while the cited route to the chest across the starting cliff requires the chain-and-sickle weapon 追命锁镰. Note those targets and return when you have the necessary ability.
After obtaining a new tool, check the map for earlier targets. Let new abilities guide your return trips instead of trying to clear every red marker immediately. A single icon changing does not mean the whole area is complete.
3. Identify what blocks a door or bridge
A door requiring a key, a passage opened from the other side and a guarded bridge may have different conditions. Read map prompts and nearby dialogue before choosing whether to find a key, another route or the next quest step.
For example, the outpost cell-key guide gives a nearby route to the key. The bridge guard belongs to a different quest condition; two obstacles being near the same outpost does not make their solutions interchangeable.outpost cell-key guide ↗
4. Read dialogue and upgrade conditions before moving on
Finish conversations relevant to the current task, and pay attention to books and quest information. Sometimes the missing requirement is a clue you have not received, not a piece of equipment.
Before upgrading, check the interface for material refund rules and costs. Do not assume every upgrade can be undone for free. Once those conditions are clear, you can decide whether to practise a weapon, finish a conversation or return to an earlier area with a new tool.
